Saturday – Reportage Day at the Warsaw Book Fair
In Poland, reportage has a long tradition (many Polish writers wrote reportages) and many outstanding representatives (Ksawery Pruszyński, Melchior Wańkowicz, Ryszard Kapuściński, Hanna Krall), due to which it is thriving and constantly developing. The Ryszard Kapuściński Award, which highlights the most interesting books of reportage, is a very important sign for authors, booksellers, readers, as well as Polish and foreign publishers.
All Saturday long, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Goethe Hall will house a cycle of meetings (one after the other, each lasting an hour and a half each) with the finalists (authors and translators) of this year’s edition of the Ryszard Kapuściński Award for literary reportage: Wojciech Górecki (moderated by Bartosz Marzec, Rzeczpospolita); Peter Fröberg Idling and the translator of Uśmiech Pol Pota (Pol Pot’s Smile), Mariusz Kalinowski (moderated by Maciej Zaremba, Dagens Nyheter); John Pomfret (moderated by Adam Leszczyński, Gazeta Wyborcza); Svetlana Alexievich (moderated by Agnieszka Graff); Chloe Hooper (moderated by Mateusz Marczewski, the author of Niewidzialni). A panel meeting entitled “The Translator – A Personage of the 21st Century”, will also be held – with the participation of Agnieszka Nowakowska, Jerzy Czech, Jan Halbersztat and Mariusz Klainowski, moderated by a last year’s finalist, Joanna Czudec. On Saturday, the authors will also be signing their books at the stand of Agora.
The Fair for Children
This year, the Warsaw Book Fair has made extraordinary preparations for the youngest readers. To publishers of children’s books we offer a special arrangement (adapted to the demands of the little readers) in the Trojka Hall – the centre of the sector with children’s books. We will also organise a children’s playroom, where parents will be able to leave their children in the care of professional nursery school teachers. The Fair will also house the final of the campaign Fairy Tales for Tomek, organised by The Children’s Memorial Health Institute. The campaign is an initiative on behalf of the six-year-old Tomek, who was poisoned by mushrooms in August 2010. In response to the campaign announced by the Institute, a few hundred fairy tales written for the sick boy were sent from all over the world. At the Fair, visitors will also be able to see an exhibition with the works of the little patients of the Institute.
The Fair will also have a special programme of accompanying events for children. During the four days of the Fair, the Sienkiewicz Hall will house, among others, the TEATRANKI theatre workshops for pre-school children and primary school children organised by the Theatrical Institute, as well as art workshops and meetings with popular authors. EMPIK will conduct workshops on books also known as the “Przecinek i kropka” Lessons, during which children will learn the history of the alphabet, script and printing, as well as the process of making books. Animators will present and describe various types of books to the participants and will read fragments of selected publications. The Slovac Institute will invite the youngest visitors of the Fair to meetings with Slovak animation. The meetings and attractions for children held on Thursday and Friday are for organised pre-school and school groups, while on Saturday and Sunday we welcome children with their parents and carers.
Exhibitions, Meetings with Authors
On the occasion of the jubilee of Nohdan Butenko, we will present an exhibition showing the works of this outstanding Polish graphic artist – BUTENKO-PINXIT. Apart from that, several other exhibitions will also be presented at the Warsaw Book Fair. These are: the exhibition “Photographers Talk”, which presents the works and statements of 25 respected masters of photography (ROSIKON PRESS), “Widoki z ziemi. Podróże poety" about Czesław Miłosz (BOSZ Publishing); “Stefan Kisielewski 1911–1991” by Małgorzata Gąsiorowska (PWM), “Sweden – Landscapes of Crime Fiction” (Embassy of Sweden in Warsaw and the Danish Cultural Institute), the exhibition of posters by Piotr Młodożeniec from the literary festival “Manifestacje Poetyckie”, “Cyrillic – a new alphabet of the European Union” (Bulgarian Cultural Institute), “Papcio Chmiel at Grunwald” (Comic-Book Warsaw Festival), “The Beauty of Ink Paintings” (National Palace Museum, Taiwan), the exhibition after the competition 17th International Biennial of Children and Young People Graphic Art (Slovak Institute), the exhibition of works by the little patients of The Children’s Memorial Health Institute “Ilustracja do mojej ulubionej bajki”.
As usual, the halls of the Palace of Culture and Science will house many meetings of Authors with their Readers. As for now, more than 300 Authors will be coming to the Fair.
The Warsaw Book Fair During the Night of Museums
For the first time, the Warsaw Book Fair will be a part of the initiative the Night of Museums.
On Saturday 14 May, from 8 p.m., the Kisielewski Hall (entry directly from Plac Defilad, from the east) will house the debate organised by the weekly Kultura Liberalna, the National Centre for Culture and the Warsaw Book Fair and dedicated to the works by Czesław Miłosz and Stefan Kisielewski: MIŁOSZ vs. KISIEL “Poland terrifies me…” / “Brr! …it is both too small and too large”. Miłosz fought the overexuberant patriotic-martyrological tradition, Kisielewski – the absurdities born in the Polish People’s Republic and the Poles’ romantic mythologies. Even though the intellectual lineages of Miłosz and Kisielewski were quite different, as were their political and literary choices, they were equally committed to challenging Polishness. What was the result of this? Did they win, lose, tie? What remains inspiring in the topics persistently picked up by both these writers? Now, twenty years after the fall of Communism, it is worth asking, whether their assessments of the state of the Polish soul are still current. The participants of the debate are: Beata Stasińska, Andrzej Mencwel, Marek A. Cichocki and Piotr Kieżun. The discussion will be moderated by Jarosław Kuisz, the editor-in-chief of Kultura Liberalna. Additionally, the Old Town Cultural Centre invites to the Performance: “Akcja Move”, which will be held in front of the Palace of Culture and Science at 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
On Books in a Different Way…
Some extraordinary events promoting reading are also planned at the Fair, such as the fashion show “Reading is a Fashion” (Saturday, 14 May). The competition for young fashion designers which is meant to promote fashion and reading on the Warsaw Book Fair is organised by Verre Studio Fotografii. Specially for this event, students of the International School of Costume and Fashion Design will design creations inspired by “books”. The creations will be made of recyclable materials, paper combined with fabric. There will be a presentation of photographs showing the collections of Eva Minge, Natalia Jaroszewska, Joanna Misztela and other designers, while an exhibition with the photographs by Anna Powierża, a part of the project “Reading is a Fashion”, will be available during the whole Fair. With this project the author wishes to show that reading is as trendy as the clothes presented in the photographs and wants to encourage people to read more often.
The Online Book Fair at www.etargi-ksiazki.waw.pl
The online edition of the Warsaw Book Fair is a very important element of the whole event. The 2nd Online Book Fair will be held on 9–22 May 2011 at the usual URL: www.etargi-ksiazki.waw.pl. The Online Book Fair starts a few days before the “traditional” fair, which – as we hope – will also have a promotional effect in relation to the PKiN edition. Apart from the fact that it lasts longer, the main advantage of the Online Book Fair is its general availability – each and every Internet user can visit it at any given time, with no limitations and without the need to leave home.
2nd Warsaw Book Sale
Once again, after the Warsaw Book Fair (21–22 May 2011), the outdoor Warsaw Book Sale will be held in the Rynek Mariensztacki. The second edition of the Sale will have ca. 60 tents with stands for book publishers and Warsaw booksellers. As usual, the participants of the Warsaw Book Fair will have precedence in receiving stands. Additionally, the Sale will have a rich programme of accompanying events provided by the organiser – Stołeczna Estrada.
The Warsaw Book Fair will be open on the following days and in the following hours:
