Coming up the May book fair – Warsaw Book Fair
Second edition of Warsaw Book Fair will be held on May 12-15 2011 in Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. Already today is known, the fair will bring together a lot more exhibitors than last year and will encourage a richer program of accompanying events. Warsaw Book Fair is organized by company Targi Książki Ltd. which was established in 2010 and was the initiative of publishers and company Murator EXPO.
The Fair
Comparing to last year, Warsaw Book Fair will take significantly more exhibition space, plus an upper lobbies of Congress Hall. Today approximately 300 exhibitors declared participation and we still have at least 1.5 months of active selling. At this year's Fair can be found almost all of last year's participants there will be also an important premieres. For the first time at the Warsaw Book Fair will appear: from Poland - Arkady, Drukarnia Opolgraf (printing house), HELION, Iskry, PLATON, Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne, UMCS, Uniwersytet Śląski, Uniwersytet Rzeszowski, WAB, Wydawnictwo Czarne, Wydawnictwo Naukowe Scholar, Wydawnictwo SWPS „Academica”; from Germany - Frankfurt Book Fair with a collective stand of the German publishers, Greece will be represented by provider of new technologies on the publishing market, Sweden - educational publishing house. There will also be representatives from the Czech Republic, India, we expect exhibitors from Russia, Spain and Taiwan. This is an effect of WBF promotion abroad – Fair is definitely gaining international character.
Nominations, awards, prizes
This year's Warsaw Book Fair will be the place of announcement of several important nominations and the awarding of prestigious prizes in the Polish book market. On the first day of the fair, before the official opening ceremony will be announced nominations for the Gdynia Literature Award, shortly after opening - nominations for the NIKE Literary Award. During the opening of the fair will be announced the nominees for the Publishing and Bookselling Season Award IKAR. Thirteenth Prize winner will be announced already on the same day in the Exhibitors' Evening. Also on May 12 Biblioteka Analiz will organize a conference "Book for tourist", during which will announce the results of the third edition of the contest "Best tourist publications." Magellan Award was established to honor the most valuable tourist publications released in the past publishing year. The wish of the organizer is the award to be not only distinction, but also important information for tourists, for whom it becomes increasingly difficult to make the right choice among the many titles devoted to the same places. Reported publications were considered this year in nine categories: a guide text, illustrated guide, pocket guide, a guide for the active, tourist atlas, map and travel plan, travel book, album, event of the year. Winners in each category will be announced during the first day of the Warsaw Book Fair.
On Thursday, on WBF will be announced the winners of the Competition for the Best Children Book "Przecinek i Kropka" organized by EMPIK. This is the first plebiscite in the Polish market for books for children, in which the winner is chosen directly by the readers: parents and children. The aim of the competition is to select and promote the most valuable, at the same time most beautifully published book for children from 5 to 8 years.
For the award “Przecinek i Kropka” 2010 publishers reported more than 100 titles. Among the books the jury has chosen 10 nominations. The selection of winners shall make the readers voting online via the website: przecinekikropka.pl. The plebiscite runs from March 9 to April 30. Formal results announcement of the Contest and awarding of prizes will take place May 12 during the second Warsaw Book Fair.
On Friday, May 13, at noon Polish Book Publishers Association will announce the results of the 51st edition of The Most Beautiful Book of the Year, running in this year under the patronage of First Lady Anna Komorowska. The winning books are traditionally exposed on fair exhibition.
On Saturday at 11.00 will be awarded Prize of Jerzy and Hanna Kuryłowicz awarded since 2003 for translators of the scientific literature. The founder is Andrzej Kuryłowicz, publisher, son of Prof. Kuryłowicz - one of the greatest Polish linguists. By working together, WBF and Polish Translators Association at the Fair will be held two discussion meetings: on Friday - "Translator and publisher” on Saturday - a panel dedicated to the specificity of the scientific and technical translations.
One of the major events of the Warsaw Book Fair will undoubtedly be a presentation of books nominated for the Ryszard Kapuściński Prize for literary reportage. International Ryszard Kapuściński Prize for literary reportage is a form of awards and promotion of the most valuable reportage books, which take the important problems of modern times, forcing to reflection, expanding knowledge about the world of other cultures. The award is established by the Warsaw City Council. Co-organizer of the contest is daily "Gazeta Wyborcza" and the honorary patron - Alicja Kapuścińska. Ceremony of giving Ryszard Kapuściński Prize for literary reportage probably will be held on Friday evening.
At the fair will also be presented the Polish Culture Foundation Award for promoting Polish books in the world, within the Warsaw Book Fair will be also an important event of printing industry - 14 May (Saturday), Polish Chamber of Printing will organize its annual ball, which will be held at the Competition Gala of Golden Griffin Award for the highest printing quality product.
Forum of New Technologies and other events for professionals
Just like last year an important role at the Warsaw Book Fair play new technologies. In addition to seminars and conferences we created separate exhibition sector. At the fair on the second floor (level IV Palace of culture and Science) companies offering audiobooks, e-book readers, services related to this industry will present their products in a single room. Additionally, in the area will be available - similar to Frankfurt hot spots - the area of the demo for direct presentation and promotion of products.
In the New Technologies Sector visitors will find a cafe – ‘E-book Café’ (organized by bezkartek.pl), where in addition to good coffee, you can try the e-book readers.
The Forum of New Technologies at the Warsaw Book Fair will be held on a two-day Conference on Electronic Book - the future or everyday life. The two-day meeting will focus on changes that have taken place in the world of electronic books in the past year, technology associated with the preparation of e-books, their reading and attitude of publishers to a new market. On Thursday for a meeting for editors invite Frankfurt Book Fair. The theme of the meeting will be a German on-line platform for e-books libreka! and German books printed directory VLB.
Meeting will be chaired by Ronald Schild, MVB GmbH President, who successfully launched a German platform for the sale of books libreka!
Warsaw International Book Fair will also be a meeting place for the industry: Polish Book Chamber planned for the Warsaw Book Fair General Meeting of the Board, AZYMUT - one of the largest wholesalers of books will organize a meeting with publishers and distributors from across the Poland. Polish Chamber of Printing will organize a presentation on the modern printing technology.
At a workshop for teachers about awakening of theatrical passion among pupils invites Theatrical Institute. Polish Librarians Association will propose to parents and teachers participation in the panel "Books for children." Child Health Center will organize a conference on advantages of bibliotherapy.
Publisher ‘Fundacja Zeszyty Literackie’ will invite the librarians for the workshop about the work of Czesław Miłosz. Conference will be organized by Institute of Literary Research PAN and the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.
In addition, on the fair will be held: a conference on legal and copyright issues (Biblioteka Analiz), a conference on current problems of bookselling business ("Wiadomości Księgarskie"), an ambitious show of contemporary cinema in Denmark (Danish Cultural Institute.)
Significantly, will be extended, compared to last year - Alley of Antiquaries. Antiquarian will occupy this year Tiereszkowa Hall. There will also be the already mentioned new technology sector, a sector of the tourist books, academic publications, collective stand of the catholic books, comic book industry sector and cheap book in front of the Palace of Culture and Science.
Second edition of Festival Comic Warsaw
For the first time on the Warsaw Book Fair will be held the Festival Comic Warsaw - a real celebration for comic book fans. On 12-15 May in the Palace of Culture and Science, comic fans will have the opportunity not only to buy the latest albums from publishers, but also meet their favorite authors, get them drawn a dedication, get rare comic books on the collectors stands or to test their strength and take part in drawing competitions live.
Special guests of second edition of Festival Comic Warsaw will be among others: Tony Sandoval - author, known for such comic books as "Dead Man and the sofa", "Nocturno" and his newest comic "Xinophixerox jokes" will be premiered at the WBF), and Alfonso Zapico ("Café Budapest" - premiered in April). In the program will also be: meetings with Polish artists, publishers, autograph sessions and film screenings. Guests of festival will also be: creator of the comic book "Jeż Jerzy" and creator of the film adaptation, which theatrical premiere was held on March 8.
In the second edition of the Festival Comic Warsaw will be awarded prizes of the Polish Association of Comic for the best comic, and for the best authors in 2010 and will be presented the results of the scholarship competition of Gildia.pl. Also will be announced contest "Zaczarowany Ołówek" on the best illustrated children's book, organized by the Association of Artists' Contur’ and the famous studio ‘Se-ma-for’ of Łódź.
Festival Comic Warsaw organizer is the Polish Comic Association and the Association of Comic Artists ‘Contur’.
WBF for Children
This year, Warsaw Book Fair in a special way have prepared on visits of the youngest readers. We offer to children's book publishers a special - adapted to the needs of young readers – Trojka Hall which will be the center of the sector of children's literature.
In addition, we will organize children's playroom where parents can leave their children under professional supervision of kindergarten teachers. At the fair will host a final of action "Bajki dla Tomka", which was organized by the Memorial - Child Health Center.
This is a project for six years Tomek, who in August last year, poisoned himself with mushrooms. In response to an appeal by the Child Health Center from all over the world, were sent hundreds of stories for a sick boy. At the fair will be possible to see the exhibition of young patients of Child Health Centre.
There is also a special program of accompanying events for children. In Sienkiewicz hall for four days, among others, will be held theater workshops for preschoolers and younger pupils of primary school organized by the Theatrical Institute, as well as mini-concerts, art workshops and meetings with favorite authors.
EMPIK conduct workshops on books also known as the lessons ‘Przecinek i Kropka’ during which children learn about the history of the alphabet, writing and printing, as well as the process of creating books. Lecturer present and describe to the participants in different types of books and read parts of selected publications.
Slovak Institute will invite young guests on meetings with the Slovak animation. While the Polish Brotherhood of Gutenberg’s Cavaliers is preparing an extremely attractive announcement of Kindergarten Theaters Festival, which final will take place during the second Warsaw Book and Press Fair on Mariensztat in May 2011.
For meetings and activities for children take place on Thursday and Friday will be invited an organized groups of preschool and school classes, Saturday and Sunday, we expect children with parents and caretakers.
Exhibitions, meetings with authors
In view of the venerable jubilee of Bohdan Butenko we will present an exhibition of excellent Polish illustrator - Butenko-PINXIT. Also the exhibition "Artists say" depicting the works and speeches of 25 recognized masters of photography (Publisher ROSIKON Press), "Miłosz in journey" (BOSZ Publisher), the exhibition from XVII International Biennial of Children and Youth Graphics (Slovak Institute), Sweden – landscapes of the crime novel (Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden and the Danish Cultural Institute ). In the halls of the Palace of Culture and Science traditionally there will be a lot of meetings with favorite authors.
About the book in a different way…
At the fair are also planned unusual events to promote reading: promotional happenings in elevators of Palace of Culture and Science - reading books by famous authors (BookSenso Ltd.) and a fashion show, "Reading is a Fashion" (Saturday, 14 May). The contest for young designers, which assumption is to promote fashion and reading on the Warsaw Book Fair organized by Verre Studio of Photography.
Students of International School of Fashion and Costume Design especially for the day will design outfits inspired by book. Creations will arise from recycled materials, paper and newspaper in conjunction with the fabric. During the show also will be presented pictures of Anna Powierża from her photography project "Reading Is A Fashion" through which the author wants to show that reading is as fashionable as shown in the pictures creations and wants to encourage to more frequent reading. Additionally will be presented photos showing the collections include: Eva Minge, Natalia Jaroszewska and Joanna Miszta.
Warsaw Book Fair and the Night of Museums
Warsaw International Book Fair for the first time will take part in the Night of Museums action. On Saturday May 14 in Kisielewski Hall (entrance directly from the pl. Defilad on the Marszałkowska street) at 20.00 will be held a debate organized by Warsaw Book Fair and the weekly "Kultura Liberalna" dedicated to the work of Czesław Miłosz, Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński and Stefan Kisielewski. The debate will have an interesting multimedia frame.

Virtual edition of Warsaw Book Fair is an extremely important element of the whole event. The first edition of Virtual Book Fair was attended by 102 companies related to the creation and distribution of books. Second edition of Virtual Book Fair will be held on May 9-22 2011 under the already-known address www.etargi-ksiazki.waw.pl.
The main benefit of virtual fair, in addition to longer term of duration is that virtual fair is widely available - any Internet user can visit them at any time, without any restrictions and without leaving home. This year we plan to facilitate the organization for exhibitors - provide for virtual fair participants a lot of functionality to a virtual stand individual arrangement.
Exhibitors will be able to: upload and edit data and information presented in publications / products, add articles or downloads, arrange virtual stand according to their needs and preferences. And also organize chats with authors, or to communicate with virtual visitors continuously accessible through the chat feature.
At the same time, we shall initiate a consultation point for exhibitors, the consultants will provide assistance in case questions arise or problems related to the arrangement of the stand.
2. Warsaw Book and Press Fair
Once again in May, the next weekend after the Warsaw Book Fair is scheduled outdoor Warsaw Book and Press Fair on Rynek Mariensztacki (May 21-22 2011). During the second edition is planned to build about 60 stands for books publishers and booksellers in Warsaw.
Traditionally, priority in allocation of stands will be entitled to participants of the Warsaw Book Fair. In addition, the Fair will be enriched with an attractive program of accompanying events, provided by the Stołeczna Estrada and Murator EXPO.
Last year's Fair was the undisputed organization and attendance success. Among the exhibitors of first Warsaw Book and Press Fair were leading Polish booksellers and publishers (among others: Wydawnictwo Iskry, Muza, Wydawnictwo Bellona, Bosz, Wydawnictwo Stentor, Wydawnictwo Trio, Wilga, Wydawnictwo Literackie, Media Rodzina, Zysk, Wydawnictwo Czarna Owca). Also Warsaw antique book shops presented their offer.
